Feeling stressed or overwhelmed?

This episode is about one of my favorite self-care strategies: unplugged time in nature. Take 20 minutes, leave your devices behind, and feel the reset happen.

I share three prompts that help you experience nature more deeply, so have a journal, notebook, or favorite app ready if you want to write them down. Take them with you for your 20-minute soul-soothing session!

If you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or uninspired, take advantage of one of my favorite self-care strategies, time in nature without any devices. As few as 20 minutes in nature have been shown to lower your stress hormone, cortisol. Soothe your soul as you sit or gently move where you can watch birds, hear their songs, feel the grass in your toes, or smell the forest floor. Schedule your nature time to catch the colors of a sunrise or glimpse a shooting star while admiring the constellations. Allow yourself to get lost in the awe the natural world helps you feel, my friend. This kind of reset soothes your nervous system in the present moment. It's self-care that everyone can practice and benefit from. Hey there, my friend. It's me, Karli, your favorite Gen X dealer of positive vibes, life and wellness coach, and founder of FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®, a community for women in midlife and beyond. Thank you so much for joining me here today. Here in Phoenix, summer is our challenging season to spend time outdoors. It takes a little more creativity, but even an early morning 20-minute swim is an impactful experience. I tune into my senses to see the expansive blue sky, hear the birds in my yard, and smell the desert landscape I encourage you to come up with different ways you can immerse in nature wherever you are. Even if you're in the middle of a cityscape, there are ways to make it happen. It just may take a little more creative thinking. An important element of this is to make the twenty minutes device-free. Give yourself the gift of limiting input to what the natural world provides. Emblazon the colors of the sunset in your memory rather than worrying about taking a picture of it. Focus on the bird you see and the song it sings. Feel the earth beneath your feet and notice the beautiful small details of a flower. It may take some getting used to, but your body, mind, and soul will thank you for it. If you like to write or contemplate using prompts, grab your journal, notebook, or favorite app. Here are three prompts to help you experience the benefits of nature more deeply. Number one, tune into your senses. For each, identify two or more things in the environment. Number two, since settling into this environment, what have you noticed about your breathing, body tension, and thoughts? And number three, where do you find awe in this environment? What does it feel like in your body? Take these prompts with you in the moment, in nature, and choose to take time with each of them. Allow yourself space between them, and then see what emerges for you. This soul-soothing form of self-care doesn't require anything complicated, my friend. Set your phone down, step outside, and let your senses lead the way. Spend 20 minutes, or longer, if you have it. If you don't, don't let that keep you from it. Even five minutes in nature will bring you benefits. You'll feel them, I promise, my friend. If you crave being part of a community of women who understand exactly what this season of life feels like, I invite you to be part of ELEVATE. It's a community hosted by me, far away from social media, and it's a space for going deeper into personal discovery and growth, together. Inside, you'll find self-paced tools related to midlife and beyond, a conversation space to connect with other members, and monthly online chats where we discuss challenges and successes and support one another. It's my favorite! If this sounds interesting, please find the link in the transcript and show notes. What's your favorite way to experience nature? I'd love to hear from you. Send me an email at karli@flipsideofmidlife.com. Thank you again for joining me here. Please come back every Wednesday to join me for my bite-sized episodes and every other Sunday for my guided visualizations and meditations. I look forward to meeting you here for all of it. Be well, my friend.
