Did you know that laughter has health benefits? Yep. According to the Mayo Clinic online, laughter reduces stress and tension. It can boost your immune system and mood. And over time, laughter can even lessen pain. I mean, there's some truth in that saying about laughter being the best medicine! Welcome to FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®. I'm Karli Newman, your favorite GenX dealer of positive vibes, community builder and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond. I love it when you join me here! This is the fourth episode in a series of five to help you capture the feel good soul lifting vibes of the summer season. So far, we've tapped into playfulness, boosted our joy, and created adventure. Today? You guessed it. We're busting a gut. In my July 23rd email, I promised to help you see humor and laughter as a form of self-care. So here are my thoughts. Based on the benefits that I listed at the top of the episode, I believe that seeking the mood boosting benefits of laughter is an act of self-love. And self-love is self-care Finding the things that make you laugh - big, hard cry laughs or just the little giggles you experience when something funny comes your way. All of it, my friend, is self-care. We do not laugh often enough. Think about it. When is the last time you had the biggest laugh where you couldn't stop laughing? Where tears were streaming down, where your stomach was hurting and your cheeks were sore from laughing and smiling so much? When is the last time that you had that kind of a laugh? That my friend is the stress release tool that helps you experience those benefits. Releasing stress, releasing tension in your body that you're holding onto, and you probably don't even notice that you are. So why not be intentional about adding more of it to your life? It is self-care. Those times when you're feeling stressed, when you're feeling, wound up, seek out laughter. Add that to your wellness toolbox. Self-care doesn't always come in big giant boxes. A lot of times it comes in very small packages and so do laughter and humor. On the other end of the spectrum of that endless laugh-cry fest are the little things that just make you smile. They might catch your attention, they might catch you out of the blue. It might be something that you know you can pull out and look at, pull up on your phone, and you know that it is going to make you smile and it might even make you chuckle a little bit. The subtly funny things that make you smile and laugh are self-care too, my friend. Even if it's a fleeting moment of 15 seconds. Self-care doesn't have to be an hours long event. So think about it my friend, those plans to connect with your funny friend, check out a standup comedy show, rewatch a movie that has always made you laugh and gets you going every time you see those certain scenes, all of it falls under the self-care umbrella. I think it's pretty amazing to think about something like laughing and humor and how I find laughter in my life qualifies as self-care. It's a wellness tool, and what might change for you, if you start to view it in that light? How might that little bit of extra effort help you feel better in your body, in your mind, and in your soul? Send me an email, my friend. Tell me how you plan to practice self-care through laughter and humor. For me? I'm enjoying a short girls trip with two longtime friends who always get me laughing. It's pretty much guaranteed that my cheeks and core muscles will be sore after our three days together. If you want a refresher on ways to notice, nurture and practice adding more laughter into your life, revisit your July 23rd email. Don't tell me you haven't signed up yet.
