FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE® with Karli Newman
Hi there! I'm Karli Newman, and this is my podcast, FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®.
In my mid-40s, my positive mindset was tested. I felt life was passing me by. I was restless in my career even though I loved my job, and exhausted after years of ignoring my self-care. PLUS the hormonal shifts of perimenopause were affecting me in ways I didn't know or understand.
Externally I maintained a positive attitude. Internally I struggled with changing my life’s direction. I didn't talk about it and it took me years to work through it.
Over time I took some big leaps, including a move back to Arizona. I created a new approach to my life and maximized my innate positivity. That’s how I ended up here - helping women like you tap into your positive mindset and inner expertise to see and seize the possibilities around you. I don’t want you to do this alone!
I’m a certified coach focused on whole-life wellness. I know from personal experience what a transformational time of life this is and how challenging it feels sometimes! I’m here to help you navigate obstacles, uncover how to move forward, and continue your unique journey of personal growth and self-discovery.
I intentionally create short episodes that fit into your busy life and get you thinking about your well-being. I cover topics that the women in this community care about (that's you BTW!).
Wherever you are in midlife and beyond, there’s space here to honor who you’ve been, love who you are, and be excited about who you are becoming.
This is the FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE® and it's a glorious place to be!
Go ahead...binge all of my episodes. xo Karli

NOTICE THE GOOD: A GUIDED MEDITATION
There’s no doubt that midlife and beyond throws a lot at us. If you intentionally foster a positive mindset, you are more adept at ducking and dodging those curveballs.
In this special episode, I guide you through a meditation to help you foster your awareness and ability to see the good around you - even when life gets challenging.
⏲️The guided meditation starts at 01:28 and is less than 8 minutes long.
Have your journal close by! It’s helpful to reflect on your meditation experience by writing immediately afterward.
xo Karli✨

NOTICE THE GOOD: A GUIDED MEDITATION
Hi there, my friend. It's me, Karli, your favorite GenX dealer of positive vibes, and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond. Thanks for being here with me.
If you receive my emails every other Sunday, then you know about a personal story I shared in my June 29th email. I'm in the midst of a not-so-fun experience, but because I've developed my awareness and ability to see the good around me, I've managed to keep a positive outlook.
{MUSIC INTRO}
A positive outlook comes naturally to me, but there's been times in my life where I really lost it and I wasn't able to pull myself out of it. So in the last five years, I've really been focusing on cultivating that positive outlook, noticing the silver lining, choosing to see the good even when things around me really suck.
And you can do this too, my friend. It can be life-changing in how you feel about where you are in life.
Guided meditation is one of the things that's really helped me when I'm feeling a bit stuck. So I wanted to create a guided meditation for you that can help you foster your awareness and ability to see the good around you, too.
If you're curious about the story I shared on June 29th, you can find the link to that email in the show notes and transcript. And if you don't receive my MIDLIFE MUSINGS emails that come out every other Sunday, the link to sign up for them is there, too.
TIME MARKER 01:28
At the end of our time together, I encourage you to write. I'll provide a prompt for you if you want to use it, or you can record your thoughts and feelings that arise. Have your journal notebook or favorite app close by, my friend.
Get into your favorite, comfortable position, sitting or lying down.
Feel free to fidget a bit to release any tension you feel in your body. Maybe roll your shoulders, do a couple of shoulder shrugs. Move your head side to side.
Shimmy your hips a little bit to settle in.
And then close your eyes or lower your gaze and take a big breath in through your nose, expanding your belly first and then your chest, and exhale out through your mouth first from your chest and then your belly.
Repeat that again in through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow any tightness or resistance to soften as you do.
One more big belly breath. And then return to your effortless breath pattern.
Take yourself to your most favorite place or space. Where you feel happy and at peace.
Notice the sounds around you, what you see, any textures, tastes, or sensations.
Notice how you feel in your body here.
Where do those yummy feelings sit? In your chest? Your belly? Or do they tingle throughout?
Hold on to those feelings as you think of a recent time when you were complaining, venting, frustrated, or hurt.
Don't relive this situation. See it from where you are in your favorite place. Be a neutral observer outside of yourself like you are watching a film.
Feel those happy, peaceful feelings as you view from that outside perspective what you could not see in the moment.
Specifically, look for the good around the ‘you’ in that film.
What could you have seen if you had chosen to see it?
Perhaps it's a person, a good deed, a funny thing happening around you that you missed.
Maybe it's a coincidence or alignment of stars you didn't notice at that time.
Might it be something that transpired as a result of this situation that created a positive outcome or learning for you?
As the neutral observer, see as many positive elements as you can in your chosen scenario.
One thing noticed is practice for next time.
Allow your observation to end and just be in your favorite place for a few moments.
Hold those feelings in your body.
Take a deep breath in. And let it go.
This practice is not intended to erase or ignore anger, grief, frustration, or any other feelings. All of your feelings are valid and worthy of acknowledgement. You have permission to feel more than one emotion at a time.
This is a strategy for when you notice you're stuck in a negative mindset or are having a difficult time seeing the positive things around you. They are there if you choose to look for them.
You know you best, my friend. You know what feels best, what works best. Your openness to try new things, to implement different tools is a testament to your desire to grow and expand in this incredible season of life.
Gently wiggle your toes and your fingers...flutter your eyes open. Those beautiful eyes.
I invite you to spend a few minutes writing about your meditation experience. If you'd like to use it, here's a prompt for you.
What did you notice as a neutral observer that hadn't occurred to you before now, and how might that influence you next time?
Bookmark this meditation so you can come back when you want to practice seeing the good that's all around you, even during the tough times.
I'm grateful for you, my friend. Thank you again for joining me today. Be well.
I'll be back in two weeks with another guided visualization or meditation. In the meantime, catch my episodes of FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE® out every Wednesday.
