FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®: IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

Midlife and beyond is a transformational time of life, and it's easy to get lost in resistance - to a changing body, empty nest, fizzling relationships, those direct mail pieces from AARP.

When was the last time you stopped trying to control it all and let your mind wander freely to consider the possibilities that abound in this season of life?

Welcome to FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®. I'm Karli Newman, your favorite GenX dealer of positive vibes, community builder, and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond.

Thank you for joining me today. I love meeting you here!

In this episode, I'm offering you a few steps that pair beautifully with this week's email. If it didn't land in your inbox, you can read it at the link in the show notes and transcript. While you're there, go ahead and join my email list.

You and I have been working through a mid-year reset this month. We've been reflecting, releasing, and realigning. Today, I'd like for us to set aside resistance and control to look ahead. Not to the end of 2025, but even further to a year from now, the middle of 2026.

I'm not a fan of New Year's resolutions, mainly because of the New Year part of the equation. We make these big, often vague, promises to ourselves, usually without deep thought immediately after a few weeks of indulgence and being outside our normal sleep routines. Then, we beat ourselves up when motivation and follow-through fade only a few weeks later.

I find it more effective to use the middle of the year to dream without my reality filter. I feel into what comes up for me and allow my subconscious mind to work its magic. Not only do I notice the possibilities around me, I see what doesn't work for me any longer. It's easier to let go when I understand how I want to spend my energy.

Another reason I love using the middle of the year as a reset point is that I come into the next year with six months of momentum behind me. Since I'm thinking about June 2026, in June, 2025, the pressure is off in December and January. I can check in with where I am, celebrate my progress, make adjustments, and enjoy thinking of a theme or intention for the New Year. It's a process that feels good! There's no pressure or stress involved.

This idea may or may not resonate with you. Either way, you'll benefit by using your imagination to dream about the possibilities in your life. Here are three steps to help you.

Number one, take a vision walk. Leave your tech behind and walk while imagining your ideal life. If your reality filter creeps in, kindly invite it to wait in the wings. What does a typical day involve in your ideal life? What are your surroundings? How do you feel being there?

The gentle movement helps open your mind and let go of the constraints of logic and limiting beliefs. Following your walk, record a voice memo or journal about your ideal life. It's invaluable to have these to revisit. Take as many vision walks as you'd like. There are gems in these visions, my friend. Clues to what you want lie inside, and your subconscious mind will deliver previously unseen possibilities to you. Use them to guide you as you look ahead to the middle of next year.

Number two, create a dynamic More Of/Less Of list. Note what you want more of and less of in your life. As you add to the list, think of the possibilities that exist if you have more or less of that thing.

Personally, I do this in a Google sheet where I have a column for more, a column for less, and a column for possibilities. I like this format because I can access it from my phone and my laptop. I add and delete things, and sometimes I move them from one column to another. It all depends on where I am and what I'm feeling.

This list is invaluable when I do any kind of personal reflection. It's a visual reminder of how I want to live my life and the possibilities that exist when I align with what I want.

The next step, step number three, helps you hone in on where you want to be in the middle of next year. Make a list of things you want to have completed, experienced, or be in the midst of one year from now. Make this list as long as you want it to be, but I encourage you to have at least five things on it.
One that feels a bit intimidating to put into writing, one that is a sure thing, one that relates to your personal growth, and two that are inspired by the possibilities you see for your life.

These five things give you a path to step onto and a direction to head starting next month.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You are the expert on you. Just because something feels good to me and works for me doesn't mean it will feel good or work for you. One of the beautiful things about midlife and beyond is knowing ourselves better than ever before. Your self-awareness and self-knowledge continue to grow and evolve.

It's a journey and you can trust yourself to know what is best for you. Yes, I encourage you to try new things, but hold onto what aligns with you and let go of what doesn't.
