FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®: REDEFINE REST IN MIDLIFE AND BEYOND

Have you ever thought about the many different ways you find rest? Have you noticed how those ways have evolved over the years? Let's dig into what rest looks and feels like for you in this season of life.

{MUSIC INTRO}

Welcome to FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®. I'm Karli Newman, your favorite GenX dealer of positive vibes, community builder, and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond.

Thanks for joining me.

In midlife and beyond, sleep is a hot topic. I'm guessing you have your own experiences with disrupted sleep, so I'd like to start by noting that sleep is a form of rest, but it's not the only form. It's possible to feel rested after a night of poor sleep. While sleep is technically a biological process, rest is something you do and feel. Rest is essentially giving yourself a break- giving your body, mind, and nervous system a break.

How you define rest now may be very different than in past seasons of life. I remember when I thought of rest only in terms of sleep, whether it was at night or daytime napping.

Then I recognized that intentional quiet time was restful. Now I notice how certain activities help me feel rested, too.

But I'm still holding onto perceptions of rest that don't match where I am now. Maybe you are, too.

Think about the potential influences of content that come into our realm of awareness or what our friends share with us. It's a worthy exercise to consider what rest looks and feels like for you without any outside distractions.

Grab your journal, notebook, or favorite app, my friend. Here are three prompts to help.

TIME MARKER 01:46

First prompt - what do I believe about rest that no longer serves me?

The second prompt - what activities feel restorative to me?

And the third prompt - close your eyes and imagine your ultimate vision of rest. Write as many details as you can about this vision.

Now that you have a bit of information to work with, here are three ways to gain clarity around how you define rest.

First, notice the moments when you feel truly rested. Is it when you walk in nature or have a slow morning? Maybe it's when you do something creative or sit quietly far away from a screen. Make note of these moments. They are clues for you.

Next, pay attention to your energy levels. Rather than pushing yourself through a day when your energy levels are low, make adjustments where you can. If your energy levels suggest a more restful approach to your schedule, make it happen!

Last, choose rituals that signal rest to your body and mind. Find meaningful ways to create a restful environment using your senses. Light a candle, cuddle up with your favorite blanket, or turn on calm-inducing music or sounds. Use mindfulness to prepare your morning beverage and feel how trance-like it can be. Or block out all sensory feedback for 10 minutes with a sleep mask and earplugs.

Rest takes on new meaning here in midlife and beyond. It's up to you to define it for you. Let go of old habits and beliefs around rest if they aren't right for you any longer.

Explore new ways to feel rested and hold on to what truly restores you.
