Hi there, my friend! I’m back with a short meditation that ties into the core message of my Midlife Musings email (self-awareness in public spaces).

By the time you reach midlife and beyond, you’ve had plenty of experience with people who seem completely oblivious to how their energy and behaviors affect others in a public setting. To be honest, each of us is guilty of being that person at least once before (but only once, right??!! 😉)

In this short episode, I’ll guide you through a 5-minute meditation to help you notice and adjust your energy so you can show up in a way that cultivates mutual respect in a public space.

Hi there my friend. It's me, Karli. It's lovely to have you here for this short guided meditation. 

A recent experience has me thinking about self-awareness in public spaces, specifically as it relates to the energy we bring into a space and how it affects others in it. We've all experienced moments when someone was completely unaware of how their actions impacted those around them. And if we're honest, we've all been that person at some point, too. 

Now, I'm not suggesting you walk on eggshells, make yourself small or ignore your needs to prioritize someone else's. What I am suggesting is cultivating a mutual respect for the shared experience. 

In the email I wrote that corresponds to this episode, I go into more detail about the scenario that led me onto this train of thought. I also share three things to help you pause, observe yourself and your surroundings, and ask, how do I want to show up here?

Let's move into the meditation. 

TIME MARKER 01:24


Grab your journal, notebook, or favorite app, set it to the side, and find a comfortable position sitting or lying down.

Close your eyes or lower your gaze, if you prefer.

And before you go any further, turn inward for 10 seconds without judgment to notice your current energy. 

Now take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold it for a moment and exhale through your mouth.

Take another deep breath, expanding your belly, and then your ribs hold at the top. And exhale completely first in your ribs, and then by pulling in your belly. Repeat that once more. Then allow your breath to return to a normal pattern. As you move your focus to your body.

Start at your toes and slowly scan your way to your head. Noticing every part of your body.

Where you feel tension or discomfort, shift with a little movement or breathe into those places to release it. Pause where you feel the weight of relaxation to notice that feeling too.

When you reach the top of your head, sit with this energy,

Observe how it differs from when you started this meditation.

Now that you're here and aware of your energy, think outside of yourself. Imagine walking into a public library and becoming part of that environment.

How does your current energy fit with this space?

What shifts, if any, might you make in your energy and actions here?

Now imagine carrying your current energy into a busy grocery store. How does your current energy fit with this space?

What shifts, if any, might you make in your energy and actions here? 

Allow your imagination to fade and take a deep belly breath in to come back into your body.

Slowly bring your awareness back to the space around you.

Gently roll your shoulders. Wiggle your fingers and toes and blink your eyes a few times to fully return to the here and now.

If you'd like to use it, here is a writing prompt for you. 

Think about a time when you were in a public space without awareness of your energy or your actions. Looking back, what cues did you miss that you would notice now? What might you do differently now that you have this insight?

Your ability to observe your energy, consider how it vibes with your surroundings, and move into a space with mutual respect for yourself and others, allows you to move through the world with less friction and more contentment. 

Come back to this meditation anytime you want a gentle boost to your self-awareness.
