Welcome to this episode of FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®. I'm Karli Newman, a Gen X woman, community builder, and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond.

Thank you for being here. 

The past two episodes helped you relinquish the search for balance and seek harmony instead. I shared a few benefits of harmony and ways to create it in the BALANCE ISN'T REALITY episode. Last week in HOW TO CREATE HARMONY MORE OFTEN, I walked you through common signs of disharmony and different ideas for hitting reset to return to harmony. Like what you did at the top of this episode.

Today I'm here to share a mindset shift that helps you make harmony your daily default. I suggest you have your journal, notebook, or favorite app ready for notes, my friend.

It's the productivity beast inside of us that makes us want to have a mile-long checklist, feel guilty if we sit quietly for 10 minutes, and do, do, do. Does any of that sound familiar? Then this may come as a relief to you. Harmony tames that beast.

To feel the ease of harmony. A mindset shift is in order.

Find your harmony mindset by reframing inner dialogue that puts you into a state of disharmony. Let's walk through some examples.

When you say, 'I have to do it all,' or another version of this is 'everything depends on me,' overwhelm is soon to follow. There will always be something to do and someone who wants something from you. The harmonious mindset shift to these thoughts is 'I get to choose where to spend my energy.' Grant yourself permission to choose what matters and delay, delegate, or delete what doesn't. 

Another example is when you say, 'I'll feel better when' or 'I'll relax when' these thoughts mean perfectionism and self-deprivation are rearing their not-so-pretty heads. Harmony isn't reliant on reaching an unrealistic milestone or punishing yourself until you get there.

Shift these thoughts to, 'I know how to find peace and feel at ease now.' Use what helps you soften into the present moment and find acceptance with 'good enough'. Understand the little shifts, like enjoying your coffee or tea while looking out a window, noticing where your body is holding tension and releasing it in a way that works for you, or even pausing for several deep breaths.

My last example is when you say, 'I must be doing something' or any thought related to idle hands leading to trouble. If you've spent years evaluating your worth on how much you get done in a day, START HERE, my friend. You are worthy of space - empty space - where you can just be. You don't need to rush around, do one more thing, or stop peeing before your bladder is empty so you can move on to the next thing! 

Shift these thoughts to, 'I am worthy of space to move slowly, be in the moment, and rest.' Know what helps you slow down. Stay away from external information entering your world for a few hours. Feel into the benefits you experience when you choose restorative actions and let go of filling every moment with to-dos. 

I encourage you to notice other thoughts that may need a shift to help you develop your unique harmony mindset. Hit pause here and write while you have these examples fresh in your mind. 

Where in your life do you notice disharmony and what thoughts come to you?Then reframe these thoughts to create feelings of harmony instead- just like I did in the examples above.
