Some days, everything just flows. Other days? It feels like you’re pushing a boulder uphill. That’s the difference between harmony and disharmony.

To have more of those free-flowing days, you have to notice your disharmony and make the right adjustments.

In this episode of FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®, I help you recognize signs of disharmony before they derail your day and discover adjustments to bring harmony back into your life.

Disharmony is a cue that helps you shift to harmony. Make the adjustment that works for you, and more of those easy, flowing days are in store! xo Karli

FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®: HOW TO CREATE HARMONY MORE OFTEN
Hey there, my friend.

You know how some days just flow? Those days when everything clicks, it all feels so easy, and you move seamlessly from one thing to the next?

Contrast that with the days when everything seems more difficult than it needs to be, and you feel like you're moving in slow motion pushing a boulder uphill.

Harmony surrounds you in the first example. In the second, disharmony has you stuck in the mud.

Harmony isn't a set-and-forget-it concept, my friend. It's something you create by knowing where you are and it's different from one day to the next. Knowing what harmony looks like for you is one part of the equation. The other is recognizing when you've lost it and how to get it back.

Welcome to this episode of FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®. I'm Karli Newman, a Gen X woman, community builder, and life and wellness coach for women in midlife and beyond. Thank you so much for being here.

In last week's episode called Balance Isn't Reality, I encouraged you to seek harmony, rather than balance, in your life. If you missed it, I covered a few of the benefits of harmony and three ways to create it in your daily life. Please go back and listen when this episode wraps.

Today, I'm here to take you through some common signs of disharmony and different ways to help you find harmony again. Have your journal, notebook, or favorite app ready for notes.

TIME MARKER 01:43

We all have those bolder-pushing days. Instead of continuing the struggle and being crushed when you can't keep up, it's helpful to recognize the signs that you're in disharmony and make adjustments to get back to a state of harmony.
When disharmony is creeping in, you may notice the following:

  • You feel easily irritated- little things seem so much bigger than they really are
  • You can't focus- you're jumping from task to task, you feel indecisive, and are making mistakes
  • You feel drained- your energy, interest and engagement levels are low
  • You want to escape- you are procrastinating, avoiding, and neglecting.
  • And you may say yes when you want to say no- you're defaulting to people-pleasing, you're shrinking, and you're avoiding

Think about it, my friend. These aren't reasons to be harsh with yourself. These are cues to make adjustments.

Now, those are a few common signs, but what other signs of disharmony do you experience? Hit pause and write them down.

When you notice disharmony looming, it's time to make the adjustments that move you back to harmony.

Here are a few ideas for you.

  • Allow yourself quiet time. Take 10 minutes where you sit quietly with no external input. Give your mind space to recalibrate, and when those 10 minutes are up, check in with how you're feeling and go from there.
  • Another idea is to move your body. Take a short walk, kickbox the air, strike a yoga pose, or dance to your favorite song. See how you feel when you're done.
  • Another way is to change your environment. Open a window or light a candle, declutter your desk or move to a completely different space. See if this environment change allows your harmony to flow again.
  • Another idea is to name the thing. What has got you in a funk? Knowing what it is allows you to address and adjust accordingly.
  • And the last idea for you is to work with your energy. Don't force it, my friend. What can you do that aligns with your current energy rather than against it?

Think about the other signs of disharmony you wrote down earlier. What can you do in those situations to help you find harmony again? Hit pause here and write them down.

Your self-awareness and self-knowledge come into play when you choose the adjustments that lead you back to harmony. Make the adjustment that matches the type of disharmony you are experiencing.

The email I sent on March 12th, 2025 gives you prompts to identify what harmony looks like for you and helps you write personal harmony statements. I love having these quick reminders of what a harmonious life looks like for me.
