Hi there! I'm Karli Newman, and this is my podcast, FLIPSIDE OF MIDLIFE®.
In my mid-40s, my positive mindset was tested. I felt life was passing me by. I was restless in my career even though I loved my job, and exhausted after years of ignoring my self-care. PLUS the hormonal shifts of perimenopause were affecting me in ways I didn't know or understand.
Externally I maintained a positive attitude. Internally I struggled with changing my life’s direction. I didn't talk about it and it took me years to work through it.
Over time I took some big leaps, including a move back to Arizona. I created a new approach to my life and maximized my innate positivity. That’s how I ended up here - helping women like you tap into your positive mindset and inner expertise to see and seize the possibilities around you. I don’t want you to do this alone!
I’m a certified coach focused on whole-life wellness. I know from personal experience what a transformational time of life this is and how challenging it feels sometimes! I’m here to help you navigate obstacles, uncover how to move forward, and continue your unique journey of personal growth and self-discovery.
I intentionally create short episodes that fit into your busy life and get you thinking about your well-being. I cover topics that the women in this community care about (that's you BTW!).

Hello my friend, if you haven't listened before, I'm Karli Newman. I'm a Gen X woman, community builder, and life coach for women in midlife and beyond.

Now, let's talk more about self-love.
Do not judge the number you gave yourself at the top of the episode, my friend.
An honest assessment means you know where you are. And that awareness allows you to take steps that help you nurture self-love in the ways that work best for you.

Wherever you rated yourself, there are things you can do to enhance your self-love practice.

Here are three ways to foster your self-love.
First, reframe your inner dialogue. Ugh, there is a mean girl in your head and she comes out quite a lot. Notice how you talk to yourself. Are you talking to yourself in a way that you would never talk to your friend? If you wouldn't say those things to a friend, why on earth are you saying them to yourself? It takes practice to catch yourself. It takes awareness to catch yourself. but when you shift from self-criticism to self-kindness, you'll feel the difference it makes.
A second way to foster your self-love is to default to self-compassion in moments of struggle. We can really beat ourselves up because we're not perfect. Perfection is a fallacy, my friend. It does not exist. Stop striving for it. The next time you make a mistake, feel overwhelmed, or struggle with self-doubt, pause, take a deep breath, and say these words to yourself.
I am human. I am imperfect. I am worthy of love as I am.
That deep breath and those words will give you just enough time to calm down, regroup, reset, and understand that it's okay.
A third way to foster your self-love is to practice, and you get to practice however you want to. This isn't about jumping on the latest trend or doing what your best friend loves to do. Unless you love those things, of course. Your self-love practice is unique and personal. Stay true to you. Try new things, but if it doesn't feel right, don't add it to your self-love toolbox. Learn what makes you feel at peace. What makes you feel excited about life? What makes you feel truly loved?
What do you need to feel loved in the moment? Whatever it is, do it! Maybe it's quiet mornings with coffee, daily walks, reading, dancing in the kitchen, finding time by yourself. Whatever fuels your soul and makes you feel deeply loved by yourself is the right way for you.
I encourage you to choose one self-love practice and commit to making it part of your daily routine. If one doesn't work, pick a few. The idea here is to practice every single day. If I were to share some advice it would be to think of things you can do in five minutes, or less, anywhere you are. The reason for that is that it makes it easier to say yes every single day to practicing self-love.
Here's the thing, my friend. Self-love isn't a race with a finish line. It's part of who you are. Self-love means you are kind, forgiving, and gentle with yourself in all ways, on all days. And the best part, the deeper your self-love gets, the more satisfying life gets. Your stress goes down, your confidence rises, your relationships flourish.
Self-love is the key to deep trust in and loyalty to Y O U.
