Midlife Musings: Yes, You Can

{MUSIC INTRO}

Hi there, my friend. It's me, Karli. Thanks for listening to my Midlife Musings

I know I appreciate a good jolt of 'you can do it' every once in a while. I'm guessing you do, too.

Sometimes it's motivation to keep going when you don't feel like it. Other times it's encouragement to step out of your comfort zone. Occasionally, it's a reminder that you have more strength, courage, and resilience inside of you than you believe in that moment.

Do you have an internal cheerleader you can count on? Who in your life excels at pep talks when you need one?

 I turn to both internal and external resources when I feel the need for a dose of motivational medicine. Let me share my 'can-do' catalysts with you.

When I want to use internal resources, I typically use one of three options.

One, I have a pep talk with myself. I talk to myself, out loud, like I talk to a friend. I give myself advice or a 'you got this' speech. I get myself pumped up, feeling confident, and ready to take action.

 The second option I use is to reflect on past experiences. I think back to a challenging time and remember when my strength, courage, and resilience served me well. If I had those traits then, I still have them now. If I used them before, I can use them again.

And the third thing I do, is I challenge myself to keep going when my first thought is 'I can't'. I push to take two more steps or go for 10 more seconds or try it one more time. I admit, this is my athlete brain kicking in. I've learned how to use it when it benefits me and keep it on the sidelines when it doesn't.

For example. I canceled my subscription to the 'no pain, no gain' mentality, and now I am more patient with myself when it comes to getting the results I'm after. I tap into my athlete brain when I want to give myself a kick in the pants and remind myself that I CAN do hard things.

I also have three go-to options for when I want to use external resources.

The first option I turn to is I tune into the vibes and messages of my favorite movement instructors.

I have three very different instructors at three different studios in three different modalities who inspire me in three different ways. One class, and I not only walk away with an impactful physical workout, but I also take away tidbits of personal growth and motivation, too.

Another option I use is I phone a friend. I know exactly who is part of my cheering squad, and I am not shy about asking them to pull out their pom poms. I do the same for them. Speaking of cheering on others, that inspires me, too. It feels so much better than acting jealous or tearing down another person.

And the third thing I do is I ask for feedback. Hearing what others love about me and what I'm doing, reinforces the path I'm on. Hearing where others see opportunities for me to improve and make a bigger impact, inspires me to think creatively. Feedback helps me trust myself and believe in myself. For me, external feedback leads to confidence and resilience.

Well, my friend, now you know the 'can do' catalysts that work for me. I hope these inspire you to think about what you do and who you turn to when you feel the need for a 'yes, you can' reminder.

I'd love to know your thoughts about my midlife musings. Send me an email at karli@823groupaz.com and share away.

Be well, my friend. I'll be back with another Midlife Musings in two weeks.
